About TSSA

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is the regulatory body responsible for operating engineer certification in Ontario under Ontario Regulation 219/01: Operating Engineers.

Note: Ontario uses the term "Operating Engineer" rather than "Power Engineer" and has four classes (4th through 1st) rather than five.

Exam Structure by Class

TSSA administers operating engineer exams following the SOPEEC (Standardization of Power Engineers Examination Committee) syllabus.

Ontario does not have a 5th Class certificate. Building operators may hold different certifications.

Permitted Materials
